Electro Optics/Night Vision (EO/NV), Sensors, Global Positioning

Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD) Electro-Optic/Night Vision (EO/NV) capabilities include overhaul, repair, modification, test and install EO/NV systems for all military branches within the Department of Defense, as well as Foreign Military Service customers.

Capabilities include:

  • Boresight alignment
  • Environmental Test Screening
  • Indoor and Outdoor Laser Testing
  • Immersion tank
  • Leak testing and purging
  • Optic support
  • Thermal Imaging
  • Vibration testing

TYAD technicians perform remove, replace and clean optical lenses, windows, and prisms, repair and test of night vision scopes and goggles, purge, charge, and perform sealing tests for Helium-based cryogenic coolers, maintain collimator-based optical test benches to support thermal image testing of various systems, and operate state-of-the-art electrodynamic vibration table with a 24-inch armature, capable of performing programmed sine and random vibration profiles.

Technicians are trained to use a vast variety of modular Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE) workstations to test and verify multiple night vision assets. TYAD utilizes a 500-meter Class IV laser test range for testing of high-power laser-based systems. TYAD constructed an extremely stable 70-foot tower with two highly surveyed test positions. There are two surveyed targets, viewable from the tower, at distances of 7.6 kilometers and 12.6 kilometers. TYAD dedicated over 8,000 square feet for EO/NV workload, with over 40 individual workstations. TYAD also operates multiple state of the art clean rooms meeting ISO 6 class 1,000, ISO 7 class 10,000, and ISO 8 class 100,000.

TYAD possesses maintenance and repair experience on Assured Position/Navigation, Precision Global Positioning System (GPS) guidance and Target Acquisition Systems; previous systems include Defense Advanced GPS Receiver (DAGR), Joint Precision air drop system (JPADS), Long Range Advanced Scout Surveillance System (LRAS3), and Lightweight Laser Designator Rangefinder (LLDR). TYAD unique capabilities include indoor GPS repeaters for laboratory GPS testing, local COMSEC capabilities to allow keying of Assured Positioning Navigation Timing equipment, and an isolated GPS calibration/survey range.

The extent of repairs and maintenance on the systems are as follows:

  • DAGR: TYAD performed Test, inspect, and Screening for faulty display back lights.
  • LLDR: Test and inspect, minor repairs, and GPS calibration.
  • JPAD: System testing, overhaul, upgrades and modernization, Guidance system firmware and Mission data updates, GPS performance testing, and servo system testing.
  • LRAS3: TYAD is the depot source of repair for LRAS3. Maintenance capabilities include complete overhaul, LRU repair, Environmental testing, GPS self-survey/ calibration, far target location testing (14km line of sight), reprograming, and Visible and thermal optical performance testing.

TYAD continues to pursue advanced technological capabilities to support the future of All Domain Sensing through both the Mounted Assured Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) System (MAPS) Generation (GEN) II and the Dismounted Assured PNT System (DAPS). TYAD is committed to maintaining pace with Army Futures Command such that TYAD remains the premier communications electronics logistics support provider of choice.
