Tobyhanna Army Depot –
The DOD’s core mission of warfighting just got a little easier, thanks to hardworking civilians at Tobyhanna Army Depot.
One of the most harrowing moments in close combat is when a warfighter must leave cover without knowing what awaits on the other side. The Family of Weapon Sights Individual is striving to make that a thing of the past.
The depot is playing a key role in the rollout of the Family of Weapon Sights Individual, a weapon mounted lightweight thermal imaging system for reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition in day, night, and in smoke or fog. When used in conjunction with the “latest and greatest night vision goggles,” the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular, servicemembers have access to a wireless rapid target acquisition capability. This capability allows for rapid offensive targeting during Close Quarters Battle, by reducing target acquisition and engagement timelines without the use of active lasers.
Tobyhanna has been nominated as the depot source of repair for both the imaging system and the goggles, a testament to Tobyhanna’s many capabilities and contributions to readiness. The depot’s expert workforce, inspired by warrior ethos and bolstered by the cutting-edge facilities at Tobyhanna, possess the ability to provide comprehensive readiness to our nation’s warfighters under one roof at peak efficiency.
The Family of Weapon Sights-Individual boasts key features, which make it the ideal sight tool for our nation’s close combat force – thermal imaging, rapid target acquisition, and its lightweight nature. These capabilities work in synergy with those of the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular. The goggles which offer superior situational awareness and targeting capabilities allow soldiers to see in low or no light and offer augmented reality functions.
With an eye toward warfighter readiness and supremacy on the ever-evolving battlefield, the vital technology is set to take off at Tobyhanna via a pilot program before fiscal year 2025 reaches its end.
Tobyhanna has provided expert support to warfighter electro-optic/night vision needs since the early 2000s, with capabilities such as overhaul, repair, modification, test and install EO/NV systems for all military branches within the Department of Defense, as well as Foreign Military Service customers. Over the years, the depot has sustained an array of EO/NV systems such as the Vehicle Optics Sensor System, forward looking infrared, laser range finders, driver viewers and even vehicle targeting systems for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.
This broad portfolio of battle-tested expertise combined with shrewd forward-focused investment to meet the needs of the future battlefield make Tobyhanna the ideal setting in which this impactful innovation can thrive.
A Class 10,000 clean room was recently installed at Tobyhanna to accommodate the new workload, enabling depot artisans to ensure product quality and safety in a sterilized environment. The modernization project is part of the nearly $1B invested in the depot in recent years to ensure the facility is prepared for the DOD’s present and future warfighting needs.
Logistics Management Specialist Jennifer Caldero said the new workload is an exciting development for Tobyhanna that reaffirms its position as a leading readiness provider. The effort also underscores Tobyhanna’s commitment to ensuring our warfighters are ready now and in the future by upping its standards and committing to continuous improvement.
Engineering Technician Daniel Taylor is eager for this new workload to arrive, saying he feels this work is right in Tobyhanna’s wheelhouse.
“Technology like these systems have been a bread and butter for the depot in the past. This new generation of technology ups the standard for our warfighters and allows Tobyhanna to continue to lead the way in readiness,” said Taylor.
Personnel in Tobyhanna’s Directorate of Strategic Initiatives, including Logistics Management Specialist AJ Ceccacci, believe Tobyhanna is well-postured for future workload in the EO/NV realm based upon past performance and the organization’s success providing readiness for joint warfighters.
“Team Tobyhanna’s current efforts are laying the groundwork for the depot to seamlessly support EO/NV requirements for the joint warfighter for years to come,” said Ceccacci.
