Tobyhanna Army Depot honored twice at Scranton Chamber SAGE Awards

By Ms. Danielle E. Weinschenk

Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD) earned awards for its workplace culture and community involvement last Friday at the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce’s Scranton Awards for Growth and Excellence (SAGE) ceremony.

The SAGE Awards recognize the outstanding efforts, talent, creativity, and innovation in Northeastern Pennsylvania.  A volunteer judging committee, comprised of a diverse group of community leaders, scores applications that meet the eligibility criteria and determine winners for the major categories. A final award, the “People’s Choice Award,” is determined through online voting by the general public.

The Impact: People and Culture Award is bestowed to recognize a business or organization that has gone above and beyond to ensure the well-being of their employees. Tobyhanna was recognized for its variety of alternate work schedules and wealth of employee support programs such as the popular Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Meditation Group and the first-of-its-kind Peer 2 Peer Flagship Program. Other successful cultural programs cited in the awards application include the “In Their Boots” shadow program, the Voice of The Employee Council, and Tobyhanna’s FY21 investment of more than $7M in employee training/development.

The Best Practices in Community Involvement Award recognizes a business that demonstrates a commitment to serving its community through volunteering and philanthropy. The depot earned the award based upon its community engagement efforts such as the Warfighter of the Quarter award, monthly blood drives for the American Red Cross, and community partnerships. Tobyhanna also earned rave reviews for its support of more than 50 community events this year, ranging from Touch-A-Trucks, Memorial Day events, Veterans Day events, and Children’s Career Exploration events.

Community partners lauded TYAD for its efforts to support the region.

“TYAD leadership makes it a priority to connect with the local community and has a longstanding commitment to Northeastern Pennsylvania,” said James Walters, Sons of American Legion Detachment of Pennsylvania Central Section Adjutant.

Taking home the award for Best Practices in Community Involvement was especially exciting, according to Community Relations Specialist Katie Nolan.

“Engaging with the community at as many events as possible has been extremely rewarding in and of itself. Having those efforts recognized with this award by the members of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce is so affirming and really has me excited about future plans and new opportunities to support the region as we head into 2023,” said Nolan.

TYAD was also nominated for two additional SAGE Awards – Impact: Community Outreach and the People’s Choice Award.

Connecting with the community and investing in its people are just two tenets of Tobyhanna’s long-range strategic plan, TOBY2035. The plan focuses on posturing the depot to support future force requirements and has additional lines of effort dedicated to ensuring C5ISR readiness across the joint services and shaping the future.
