First responders assigned to Tobyhanna Army Depot’s Installation Services Directorate, Risk Management Division, earned high praise last week during a ceremony honoring firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and members of law enforcement.

National First Responders Day, which celebrates the lifesaving acts performed by the men and women who arrive first on the scene of an emergency, was observed on October 28. After the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, police officer Sean Collier was shot and murdered while responding to reports of a disturbance. In his honor, his brother Andrew Collier fought to start a movement of support for the country's first responders, with the help of the All Clear Foundation. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Tom Cotton proposed the National First Responders Day as an official observance on May 18, 2017.

“First responders are real-life superheroes,” said Bill Start, Risk Management Division chief. “I appreciate the skilled men and women who work tirelessly in law enforcement and fire and emergency services for everything they do every day.”

During the ceremony, the Law Enforcement and Fire and Emergency Services Branches received plaques touting the group’s selfless service, grit and teamwork as well as professionalism, protection and support provided to the workforce and residents of Tobyhanna Army Depot.

“I am truly proud for the utmost professionalism and how each and every one of these men and women put their lives on the line. It is a pleasure to take a moment to honor and show appreciation,” said Will Ramey, director of the Installation Services Directorate.

Branch employees received individual certificates recognizing their dedication and service to the depot.

“I appreciate everything they [first responders] do for Tobyhanna Army Depot,” said depot commander Col. Daniel Horn. “It’s important to take time to recognize the incredible work being accomplished by this accomplished group of people. We honor you all.”

The First Responders Day celebration was a TOBY2028 Invest in Our People initiative.
